Repairing and patching nails

How I patch my nails

Hello all :) I wasn't planning on doing this post, but I have had some people ask how I repair and patch my nails that have bends or splits in them. So as I will be doing my nails for my next Christmas Challenge, I thought I'd do this post too, and the patches on my nails needed changing. They last me about two weeks.
I did use the Orly Nail Rescue kit, and although this is good I found it made my natural nail feel and look too thick. I even lost the whole length of my thumb nail as it made them very brittle when patched with this. So I was looking and found a fibreglass repair kit on ebay.
Now I'm not claiming to be an expert on repairing or patching nails, this is just how I do it with the fibreglass kit.

I started by soaking off the old patches with acetone and cotton wool, and wrap foil around to hold it in place.

Excuse my naked nails, but I wanted to show where the splits in these two nails are.

Brush on resin, resin activator, sticky fibreglass strip and stork scissors. I bought the scissor separately just to use when I patch my nails.

I paint a thin coat of resin on the nails and use the activator to make it dry quicker.

Then cut a strip of the fibreglass, its sticky on one side so it stays in place when you put it on your nail.

Another coat of resin and activator again. I file and buff so the nail feels smooth and there are no sharp bits or bumps.

Then a final coat of resin. When the splits grow up my nails so I can see then on the underside, I paint some nail glue over it for added and extra strength.

Here they are again, all finished and base coated, ready for my next nail art. It's hard to tell they are patched, the fibreglass is not only strong with the resin, but doesn't make your nails feel unnatural in anyway. And I hate having my nails patched lol but with this I forget they even are!!
Hope you liked this post and it helps anyone in anyway :)
Much love to you all, and I'll be back tomorrow with my next Christmas Nails Challenge - Reindeers.

  1. What a great tip! It's terrible when you break a nail all the way down and you have no choice but to file it down - I hate that, so will try your suggestion to patch it up so that at least it might not be so short when it does finally come off. Xx

    1. Yh. I file my nails down about every 4 weeks too, so eventually I file out the split and no need to patch anymore :) x
